I finally did it—made something totally freehand. It’s incredibly simple, but hey, it’s mine, and it’s something I’ve needed for a very long time. If you’d like to make your very own grocery bag keeper, here’s a rough idea how. I’m writing this from memory, so if you find any mistakes, feel free to let me know.
(SC in next SC, 2 SC in next st) until end of round—21 SC.
(1 SC in next 2 st, 2 SC in next st) to end of round—28 SC.
(1 SC in next 3 st, 2 SC in next st) to end of round—35 SC.
Chain 4, skip one stitch, treble crochet in next stitch. (Chain 1, skip 1 SC, TrC in next SC) til end of round.
(TrC in ch-1 space, ch 1) til end of round. Repeat until it’s as long as you want, then DC in next ch-1 space, SC in next ch-1 space, SC in each ch-1 space and each TrC til end of round. SC in each st for 1 more round.
Make a chain as long as you’d like your handle to be. SC to fasten halfway across the bag, SC in next chain on bag, turn, SC in each chain of the handle. Slip stitch to connect it to the bag. Fasten off, weave in ends.
